I'm pretty sure he played in both the 1983 and 1986 premiership teams before that as well.
Indeed I had forgotten about the Hawks previous wins. In fact Russell Greene would have played in 6 consecutive grand finals from 1983 - 1988 for a WLLWLW record.
6 straight is an incredible record. I'm guessing he would hold the record for most GF appearances for any player to have once worn the Red, White and Black.

He was a good guy who left the club under strange circumstances. Apparently it was mid way through a season when he found himsself at Hawthorn. He turned up to his first game for them and his colleagues to be hadn't been notified of his inclusion and thought he arrived at the wrong game

He made a welcomed return to Moorabbin in the late 90's as an assistant under Stan.

I remember clearly when Russell left St Kilda as he had been in the same year as me at Karingal High School and I followed his career with interest. He was traded early in the season (around R8) for Mark Scott who was a prolific goalkicker for the Hawthorn reserves and Tony King.

Scott kicked around 100 goals for us in 30 something games, King played 4 games for 2 goals.

Looks like Hawthorn did the best from that deal!!

He was traded due to a lack of cash flow. Club was insolvent.

Dead right mate well done. Can't be many others that must be close to it.

Didn't something strange happen with Stephen Newport? We somehow got him back from somewhere we'd packed him off to?

How close did Matty Lappin get to a GF?

I remember I felt really happy for Deano Rice getting a premiership. Loved him as a Saint, and after too. He deserved success after so much heatbreak.

We delisted Newport then (unfortunately) redrafted him.

We've done that with a few blokes.

But did Newport actually go away and then come back?

What about, premiership players at other clubs who came to St Kilda to win a wooden spoon. Its true, this is pretty depressing...
