Stop guarding space FFS
I am so sick of players guarding absolutely f&@k all whilst free players just walk around them and pick up cheap possessions at will. How hard is it to play man on man accountable football.

yep. certainly a problem with our dated form of zoning. our players seem unsure whether they are in a zone or doing a press. its a kind of hybrid but was a real mess today. hawks players were just like ok idiot u can guard that space all u like. ill just run around it or kick to a free player. our once might defensive game was so easy to combat. was kind of a witches hat strategy.
Our defensive strategy works a treat as long we at least go level out of the stoppages. REF the first Q today.
If we smashed out of the stoppages then it doesn't matter what defensive tactics you use, you're gonna get pumped. REF the 2nd-4th Qs today.

yeah. but it doesnt take the place of reading the play and attacking a contest. guard a space. but when the ball is coming to your area. at least go for it.#1GILL wrote:guarding space wins games when it's done correctly.
guarding space seems to have become a replacement for playing footy. like its own mantra. guard space. but dont f**cking ball watch like just guarding space in itself is enough. FFS.
oh. and making a tackle stick might also assist.
Whilst collingwood's press is aggressive ours seems very passive and it is too easy for teams to adjust.
Even in the first quarter today we were waiting for a hawthorn error rather than forcing one ourselves.
Fact is that our game style was designed to beat the run and gun Geelong. Unfortunately they aren't the benchmark anymore and we are suffering from the brilliant discipline of our players to make our gameplan second nature.

im pretty sure pies and cats players dont just stand dead in a space like they are minding a carpark for a mate who is driving up the road.plugger66 wrote:Exactly. Every club does it and it is the only way to play these days.#1GILL wrote:guarding space wins games when it's done correctly.

Yep, perfect example was when Jones stood on the defensive 50 and just watched while the opposition led up to the ball and then kicked it over his head to someone standing behind him inside 50. He didnt move at all, amazingCon Gorozidis wrote:im pretty sure pies and cats players dont just stand dead in a space like they are minding a carpark for a mate who is driving up the road.plugger66 wrote:Exactly.
