A useless yet interesting look at drafting

Post: # 1072542Post twirlyhair »

Food for thought, and a useless yet interesting discussion.
Below is a list of players that we could have drafted alongside the players we did draft. That is, we chose the second named player above the first named player. Based purely on where they went in the draft of course and disregards all mitigating factors! Shows how important your recruiters are though!

Alan Didak for Kosi pick 2 2000
Chris Judd – Luke Ball pick 2 2001
Jimmy Bartell – Xavier Clarke pick 5 2001
Steve Johnson – Nick Dal pick 13 2001
David Merrett – Matt ferguson pick 22 – 2002
David Rodan – Matt McGuire pick 21 – 2001
Dane Swann – Josh Houlihan pick 49 2001
David Mundy – Raph Clarke pick pick 8 2003)
Nathan Van Berlo – Andrew McQaulter – pick 17 2004
Mark Lecras – Cain Ackland pick 33 – 2004
Jack Riewoldt – David Armitage – pick 9 2005
Chris Dawes – Brad Howard – pick 27 2006
Cyrol Rili – Ben McEvoy pick 9 2007
Dayne Beames – Tom Lynch pick 13 2008

Yawn.

I've seen this a million times before.

How about a list of players that were chosen that are similar or worse than ours that were taken at a lower pick for some balance please???

Didn't expect much but looking at it. We had, as most clubs did, an opportunity to draft all those guys..!

Imagine Bartel Swann Judd in the midfield. Along with Montagna and Dal Santo.

Recruiting is hard. Opportunity creates players as well. Luck also plays a role.

How many other teams also passed on those players, too?

What about the clubs who let Montagna slip through to us at pick 38, Gwilt at pick 68, Fisher at pick 55, Gilbert at pick 33.

The year McQualter got picked up was a shocking year - full of duds, with only a handful of those players still in the system and virtually no stars.

The ones that make me angry are the selections of Tom Lynch and Brad Howard, along with the Lovett catastrophe. That's where we missed out.

Armitage may yet prove to be a reasonable selection (I know our preferred player was Ben Reid), and McEvoy was worth the punt with our dreadful ruck stocks at the time.

There were so many better players we could have picked up instead of Lynch.

On a positive note, this year they got it right. WE may end up with at least 4 decent players from the 2010 draft, and boy, don't we need them!

Assuming someone could be bothered, and I certainly can't, I'm sure a similar analysis could be done for each team.

Not only is it a pointless exercise (IMO) but it has already been done to death on this forum.

Hmm i think your shortsighted in your opinion about this. I think the list indicates that recruiting is critical as is the development of our players. Too see that some players are a long way behind players of the same draft is worrying. For example the lack of development in a player such as Tom Lynch as opposed to where Dayne Beams is cause for concern. I think it is fair to say that our recruiting has not been good, and we should be, and the club should always be reminded of this. It certainly doesnt hurt to look at the past to be able to move forward.

Ashley Watson– Nick Dal pick 13 2001
Callum Urch– Matt ferguson pick 22 – 2002
Aaron Rogers– Matt McGuire pick 21 – 2001
Brent Colbert– Josh Houlihan pick 49 2001
David Trotter– Raph Clarke pick pick 8 2003)
Ryan Willits– Andrew McQaulter – pick 17 2004
James Ezard– Cain Ackland pick 33 – 2004
Daniel O'Keefe– David Armitage – pick 9 2005
Clayton Collard– Brad Howard – pick 27 2006

If I'd backed all the right horses in all the races I'd placed bets on, then I'd own all you bastards.

Come to think of it, I reckon I own you all anyway....

Pretty sure it was a simple look and see. Good post, which had some effort put into it.

Re a post by crcwyn* Ben Reid..? Pretty sure we were interested in midfielders back then. Plus not too sure how much he would add to our team anyways.

Crcwyn is on the money. We were definitely going to draft Ben Reid before collingwood snuck in.

Beams instead of Lynch?

Well that would've helped us with the "schoolgirl" scandal

Well at least the thread title was half right.

It's not that interesting though.

If it is I don't understand why go tall that draft....

But it does seems like collingwood could have pigeonholed us by having both before and after picks.

Anyways. Reid is good. But would add much to our team at the minute compared to Armo.

At last I think 2011 draftees will be our best in a decade.

Ledger and Siposs are the cream for me. Real star potential.

Crippsy not far off and all the other guys at least showing promise.

Lord perish the thought of Dayne Beams and Sam Gilbert under the same roof...

Yep that was from JB. I don't know why they were so sold on him - but that information is correct.

Yes - yet our club hasnt come to the realisation that Mcqualter was part of a dud batch.
