Time to play the youngsters....
All, we are not going to progress this year and play finals footy with the likes of Andrew McQualter, Ben McEvoy and Steven Baker in our best 22, let's be realistic they would not get a game with another AFL club. Steven Baker has been a great servant for the saints however his time is up. I am amazed how Andrew McQualter gets a game every week and Ben McEvoy is too slow and currently ranked 16th in the AFL for ruck duties... Our downfall has been the ability to recruit quality ruckmen, I'm happy with Gardiner however he is at the tail-end of his career. It is TIME to start playing more youngsters' and even give the irish experiment (Tommy Walsh) a game. In hindsight if we had recruited Ben Cousins and retained Luke Ball (offered him a decent contract) we would have won back-to-back flags. On paper a side that has Andrew McQualter, Robert Eddy and Ben McEvoy will not bring you much success on that final day in September... PS: Might be a good idea to start playing Riewoldt on the wing also. Richo played his best footy there....

Don't agree.
Mcevoy for one is a young guy.
Who would you put on their small forwards if not baker.
As for roo on a wing, would be for a change up only and to say richo played his best there... Yeah right... Richo, where did you play your best footy? Deffo my time as a sneaky wing man......!

Dempster springs to mind to replace Baker playing on a small forward...
Ben McEvoy is young and is a good overhead mark however is very slow compared to "other" ruckmen.
Didn't you watch the losing grand final last year... M8 a snail would have been quicker...
I thought Nick Riewoldt would have been playing at another level this year after last years debacle... I was wrong....
Does anyone know how Lenny Hayes operation has gone?

Why do you care - he is not a kid.The_Sainter wrote:Does anyone know how Lenny Hayes operation has gone?
Lance or James??
There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, "Enough is enough." For me, that time is now. I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in <redacted>. Over the past three years, I have been subjected to a <redacted>investigation followed by <redacted> witch hunt. The toll this has taken on my family, and my work for <redacted>and on me leads me to where I am today – finished with this nonsense. (Oops just got a spontaneous errection <unredacted>)

It is time for changes , rotating players that are past their use by date and the proven duds may see us win 5 or 6 games, blooding young players may result in even less wins but could be beneficial at draft time ie providing our recruiting staff can finally demonstrate some knowledge of the game.
I'm not just being negative and believe the following ideas could work in the long term. Drop Baker (past his use by date, poor disposal), Blake (ditto Baker), McQualter, Dawson, Peake, Stanley, Eddy, Gamble, Jones, Cahill, Heyne and possibly Smith all lack either the pace, skills ,concentration or work rate to play at the top level and will not be a part of a competitive team of the future.
Stick with McEvoy (no other option at present), bring in Winmar, Cripps, Ledger, Sippos, Walsh. Play Gilbert, Kosi and Armo hopefully all will find form and can then be traded to GWS for 16 year olds. The final touch would be to replace Lyon with the likes of Malthouse (remember where he started) to develop these players, this is a long term fix but the immediate future is already irreversible

The last thing we need is major disruption to the side. I think it's promising seeing players like Will Johnson debuting, but it has to be kept in perspective. We're lacking major confidence, but it'll come. Patience.
When they created LENNY HAYES (in the shadow of Harvs) they forgot to break the mold (again)- hence the Supremely Incredible Jack Steven!!

Perhaps a team like this would be interesting, and something we might see by round 10
Gwilt Dawson Fisher
Goddard WALSH Gilbert
CRIPPS Armitage Gram
Schneider Riewoldt STEVEN
SIPOSS Koschitzke Milne
McEVOY Jones Montagna
Inter: Dal Santo LEDGER Gardiner Ray
Emerg: Stanley Winmar Smith Geary
That's 5 players aged 21 or younger (and one new to AFL in Walsh)
Consigned to back up status only: Blake Baker McQualter Dempster.
