Participating in some kind of Police action on foreign soil maybe, but defending Australia?

They are defending this country against terrorism! Afghanistan was the world's biggest terrorist training base and the Taliban are still a very real threat. There was even a plan to set off a bomb at the MCG a few years ago on Grand Final day!

All were young men who heard the call to arms, enlisted and then proceeded overseas to fight for their country and friends. They did not return to their families and they did not return to their friends or the Saints, the club for which they played.

THE AFL has paid tribute to Peter Chitty, who played two games for St Kilda and won the famous Prisoner of War's Changi Brownlow.

Chitty, along with a number of other League footballers captured in Singapore's notorious Changi prison during World War II, started a football league with a best and fairest medal awarded.

After the final between Victoria and The Rest, which was watched by 10,000 prisoners was won by Victoria, Chitty was awarded the best and fairest medal. The medal became known as the Changi Brownlow.

"Peter Chitty later said the competition in Changi was as tough as any football he ever played," AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said.

Among those Chitty beat out for the Changi Brownlow was Fitzroy star Wilfred 'Chicken' Smallhorn, the 1933 Brownlow Medal winner.

Roland Perry's book 'The Changi Brownlow' tells the incredible story of Peter Chitty and the fall of Singapore.

At times it is an horrific read, but entirely compelling.

I wish part of someone's role on the coaching staff of each AFL team was to educate players about the depth and substance of people who have graced our game like Peter Chitty.

Those Chitty boys were tough buggers!
