In 5 years time Ben McEvoy will be...
1. 26 years old
2. On the verge of the prime years in his footy career - ruckmen develop later than others
3. In the leadership group at St Kilda, and
4. Be Captain of St Kilda
This guy is a born leader and below the current leadership group is the next apparent leader.
For those whacking Macca left, right and centre, HE IS ONLY 20 YEARS OLD!!!!!
GIVE THE GUY A BREAK!!!

And it's not HIS fault that Gardiner got injured, King retired, Patterson got delisted or that the club did not recruit another ruckman. One Eyed Saint wrote:1. 26 years old

He shouldn't be our first ruck but he is - and he's giving it his best shot.

I think in 5 years time he could be an All Australian ruckman.
For a big, slow, lumbering ruckman, it amazes me just what he can do around the ground.
As for his ruck work, he's one of the worst in game. He has years of improvement ahead of him, but no where near ready to be number 1 ruck. The problem, there aren't many other options. Stanley, too skinny, too green, can't imagine him ever cutting it as a ruck. Kosi, an average ruckman at best.
The positive, if this ends up being a transitional/rebuilding season, Mac will be given nothing but game time.

Sore and tired from overuse...
"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

They should allow him to jump on a trampolineplugger66 wrote:How does that help his speed and jumping. Very strange idea.BigMart wrote:He's going to be ok.....
Biggest problem.....he is not the most agile or sppedy fellow....
Ryder, natinui, clarke, jamar, roughead all will give him issue....movement wise.....
Needs to add 10 kilos
Another opportunity awaits!

It wont plugger....very hard to change you speed...
But increased size will allow him strength, therfore where he loses in one dept....he gains in another....
Ottens is not quick, nither is sandi, jacobs, warnock, jolly, mumford....there 'strength' lies elsewhere
Not as fast as ryder, but can push him aside one on one...
Not too difficult to understand

Pretty sure Ben weighs enough. Strength is a different thing. Comes with time and age. Anyone who has played as much excellent sport as you should understand that.BigMart wrote:It wont plugger....very hard to change you speed...

Muscle mass and strength have a positive correlation and a proportional relationship.....
The larger the cross sectional size of a major muscle group, the greater the movement force it creates.....
So why dont all afl players get huge??
Increasing muscle mass also effects the speed of it being able to contract, and more importantly the energy required for the contraction...
I think you are talking about power which is strength *speed
Optimum power is a delicate balance.......you also have to take into accout
Biomechanics of the individual, and percentage of white and red muscle fibres in the group.....which although can be trained is primarily genetic
Which gets back to my point with ben, hard to improve speed....it like trying to teach someone to bowl fast....a lot of it is genetic make up

Ben is 95kg at 200cm...Kosi 96kg at 197cm
Hille....109
Ottens.......106
Mumford.....108
Sandilands.....120
Jolly......104
Gardiner......103
I could go on
Point is most afl ruckmen.....outside of the great athletes.....are around 105kg.....
Ben, like tyrone vickery is notheavy enough to hold his ground one on one.

Ben is at least 100kg. The others could be more as well but Ben would be 100-102kgs. He doesnt win the ruck because of his weight. It is his leap and also strength which comes with time.BigMart wrote:Ben is 95kg at 200cm...Kosi 96kg at 197cm

Is that just your theory......or is it a scientific view
That strength and time on the earth are related......
Pretty sure afl players get stronger after many pre seasons is hundreds of weights sessions....
Harvey, jones, pecket, baker, hayes and every other player adds at least 10kg to their frame in whilst playing afl...
Riewoldt entered the afl at 81kgs....now is listed at 98 (more like 95)
And btw
Ben mcevoy id skinny compared to the other big bodied ruckmen....you can surely see that, jolly brushes him aside

So Ben hasnt added weight. Is that what you are saying. He is probably 10-15 heavier than when he started. When he stands next to other ruckmen apart from one or two I dont think he looks smaller in frame but he does get brushed aside sometimes. That to me is strength that will come. I am pretty sure most 21 year ruckmen occasionly get brushed aside but get more strength with age.BigMart wrote:Is that just your theory......or is it a scientific view

Opinion amongst coaching staff and players AND Ben himself pre-season agrees with BigMart ... he needs to add another 8 to 10kg to his frame to match the big strong ruck forces needed for centre clearances and ball ups
his endurance is much better than average and in fact high even amongst our own players
key to his development is slowly adding the weights through weight training without impacting his endurance and speed
will take another 2 years to become the player he is destined to become
will be very much in the "King" mould of ruckman
he is 1st ruck in a side 2 years before his time
put it into perspective like this Carltons #1 draft pick Kruezer would NOT be Carlton's #1 ruck this year if he wasnt injured and Mac was drafted same year
he is doing a great job at being competitive ...
Let's hope Kosi can get some match fitness in the next 2 weeks thenand help him for the next few months while Gardie also recovers and then takes a month to get to match fitness
