I'd also have Shanahan out, but simply because I don't rate him as one of our best 22 players of the past 20 years.plugger66 wrote:Yep. Great post.stinger wrote:goodie wrote:Jamie Shanahan Max Hudghton Steven Baker

I'd have Shanahan out because he wanted a payrise for the 1998 season. And because he didn't knock Jarman out.Dr Spaceman wrote:I'd also have Shanahan out, but simply because I don't rate him as one of our best 22 players of the past 20 years.plugger66 wrote:Yep. Brett Voss and David Grant were the best small defenders of their time.
Grant often gave away 3 to 4 inches on his opposition player and was in the top 10 marks regularly, in an era before dicky back kicks and keepings off.
Voss and Grant saved St Kilda plenty of times with their interception marks.
Grant was ahead of his time in fitness, endurance, as well as a man of his era for courage and aggression.
I would argue that Ablett knocking out grant cost us MORE in 91 than burke who was yet to emerge as the class player he became.
Grant was killing the cats with his interception marking. With him out, the passage to Brownless was opened up IMO.
Noting in 91 we thrashed Hawthorn and WCE during the season.
I loved Grant, and would be surprised that so many have forgotten him

B: B.Voss Frawley Grant
HB: Goddard Max H.S.Fisher
C: Winmar Hayes Jones
HF: Dal Santo Loewe Riewoldt
F: Hamill Lockett Milne
R: Everitt Harvey Burke
Int: Ball Montagna Rocket Keogh Powell.
Voss and Grant were dominant in the air, and perfected the spoil when the mark was not on. Frawley was the steam locomotive that intimidated the opposition forwards.
Goddard and Fisher offer the run and Max the steel in the middle. Morris had 2 outstanding years, but Max was better over a decade.
Wings would be winmar and jones, both goal scoring runners, Jones defence was weak though.
Half forwards, I like Roo and Dal, both have massive tanks, I wonder if Roo and Locket would get in each others way though.
F, Hamill would play up the ground, I'd give him an arc to kill people in and not let him into the corridor which would be loewe's domain.
FF. Lockett with Milne at his feet, Obie was good for 2 seasons, Milne good for 200 games.
interchange would be all mids and smalls, Powell and Keogh to protect banger, ball, harvey, dal, Montagna etc. Powell was wiry and finished at 30, but he gave everything in his body to the team.
I think just outside would be baker, blake , peckett, and Andrew Thompson. Dean Rice I think just misses out, although winner of a flag with the Blues, and barker was gone in 89, would have pushed any of the HBF or BPs for a position witouth a doubt, could play forward as well.
Just no room for FG or Hall as our forward line is looking too big.
Both wakelins played their best footy elsewhere.
Would have liked to have slipped in Videovic as a back up ruck, but loewe would fill that role in his 30s for the saints.

That's definitely the case with Shane but Darryl was a great CHB at St Kilda. Easily the best of the last 20 yearsDan Warna wrote:Both wakelins played their best footy elsewhere.
Remember the Stan Alves kick out routine: Kick-it-to-Darryl. It was so predictable yet he nearly always took the grab. Such a great competitor until the Timmy years when he visibly lost heart in the club. Was sad to watch him eventually stop chasing opposition players.
And want to back up your comments on David Grant. What a great player. Just stood on players heads to make up for his lack of height. Treated disgracefully by the club.
Voss is the swingman in my team. As brave a player as I've seen. I remember when we picked him up calling him 'ABOM' - Adopted Brother Of Michael. Remember him walking into the forward line against Cornes in the 2004 prelim and the commentators beinf bemused? The birth of the defensive forward I reckon.

yep...a prick......him and smith were like rats deserting a sinking ship.....it was all down hill from there...mind you...the coach wasn't too enamoured by shanigans.....and i didn't ever want to see him wear the red white and black again...bit like guerra after that swans defeat in the prelim....
would not rate either of them....not in the best 50 to 100 to have played in the past 20 years in my opinion....

goddard is a brilliant player. would fit in this team on any given day. it's funny how people are writiing him off after his form has dipped at the start of the season. mark my words, he'll be back as soon as you can say "henry kissinger" and the media will be riding him as a brownlow favourite.

i once had (believe it or not) an intelligent conversation with a filth supporter, reflecting on that game. he raised an interesting hypothetical - what would have happened it alves made the move taking shanahan off and putting rob harvey on jarman?stinger wrote:i agree should n't have...but he did...maybe they can share equally in the blame...Sainternist wrote:Michael Gardiner > Everitt

remember, harves was getting done like a dinner by mcleod. he was a tough opponent and could play a number of different positions. he would matched jarman for pace. it may have been a slightly different story.

Oh, i forgot the coach.....
Of course
Grant Thomas
Btw.....hamill only 90 games does not stack up to 230 from frankie.......in 1997 frankie was 3rd in the b&f in one of our more successful teams....in 1994 he was runner up.....ver underrated....13 years on the list says something....of course thats imo
Goddard has had two great yeears, one good year and the rest have been OK
