ANZAC Day Footy
Wonder if any of our boys will win the coveted ANZAC day medal this year?
I think James Hird won three.
But I can't recall any of our players ever winning this prestigous award.
Even Harves, good as he was, could never nail one.

It's plain wrong as an event and every year it makes me feel sick to the stomach that the marketers at the meat factory could stoop so low.
"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

IMO the Anzac spirit has been dirtied by this event.
I've been pissed off about this for years.
The Anzacs fought and died for our country, nothing was gifted to them, they earnt their respect, and earnt Australia a reputation as a tough and courageous nation based on their sacrifices and heroics in europe during the great war.
Since then our soldiers have fought and represented Australia with that spirit in mind and heart.
And now the AFL gift... GIFT this sacred day to two clubs that have done nothing to earn this privilege...
IMO the 2 highest placed Victorian teams should play at the G on Azac day, and the 2 highest placed non-victorian teams play at the highest placed team's home ground.
Then at least this privilege to represent the Anzacs is earnt, not given to clubs based on revenue from attendances.

How is the Anzac spirit dirtird by the event. I know we dont like it that it is the same 2 teams but the huge crowd is important to the spirit of the event. Melbourne V North just wouldnt be the same as the other 2 sides.Leo.J wrote:IMO the Anzac spirit has been dirtied by this event.

I agree the Anzac spirit is not dirtied by the current setup.Âplugger66 wrote:How is the Anzac spirit dirtird by the event. I know we dont like it that it is the same 2 teams but the huge crowd is important to the spirit of the event. Melbourne V North just wouldnt be the same as the other 2 sides.
But nonetheless it does provide an unfair financial advantage to a couple of clubs that least need it. And it's not like all the VFL loving Anzacs and their families barracked for these two teams. Maybe Keith Miller and his family would have got a kick out of seeing the Saints play in this important event.Â
And really, if the top 2 VIC teams from the previous season are lining up there's little chance it will be a fizzer regardless of who those teams are.
IMO of course.Â

Why do Collingwood play on Anzac day when they are one of four teams who did not disband during the whole of the Great War where the Anzac legend was born?
In 1916 Collingwood were in the competition while six other teams did not field teams while their young were men in the trenches.
Collingwood bravely won the premiership in 1917.

May have been if it was us and the pies this week the way we are going. But really my point is if it was say North and Melbourne playing the crowd would be lucky to 40,000 and the build up wouldnt be anywhere as big as there is rivalry between those 2 clubs.Dr Spaceman wrote:I agree the Anzac spirit is not dirtied by the current setup.Âplugger66 wrote:How is the Anzac spirit dirtird by the event. I think this whole debate needs more information. I would like to see an accurate profit & loss from Collingwood, Essendon & the afl for any/all of these games. We all know Demetriou's thirst for profits and salary increases, so if there's money in it for the afl, he won't be changing it. Leys not forget that this "tradition" started with former RSL State Secretrary, Bruce Ruxton selling his sole to Collingwood !!
NEW scarf signature (hopefully with correct spelling) will be here as soon as it arrives !!

It's dirtied because the 2 teams are given this privilege, they have not earnt it.plugger66 wrote:How is the Anzac spirit dirtird by the event. Also if the Dees and the Roos were the 2 best Vic teams from the previous year you would have plenty of interest.plugger66 wrote:How is the Anzac spirit dirtird by the event. Then you could have an Anzac trophy, and other clubs could win a anzac medal, all of these being earnt rather than given.

I beleive you would still get the crowd BECAUSE it is about ANZAC day, NOT because of the teams playing.
we should at least try it ONCE before we say it won't have the same impact.
And that is why I said they would 40,000. Normally even if they were up the top they would only get 30,000. Also what happens if one of the sides is struggling likw we are at the moment.Leo.J wrote:Also if the Dees and the Roos were the 2 best Vic teams from the previous year you would have plenty of interest.plugger66 wrote:How is the Anzac spirit dirtird by the event. What annoys me most is they trot out the same pre-match stuff each year. Players talking to vets, coaches saying we can't compare a game to footy, etc the same boring shite every year.
I used to get fired up watching in the past but not anymore especially after last years gf2 result
Oh, and I have been to Gallipoli so sort of know a bit about the legend

Also noticed during the week that they have awarded retrospective Anzac Medals, Sav Rocca recieved one.
Now we're in the 21st century, I believe Anzac Day is a much more relevant day of reflection and recognition than Good Friday is, yet Good Friday is sacrosanct because there's isn't enough cash to be made from exploting it.

In 1916 Collingwood were in the competition while six other teams did not field teams while their young were men in the trenches.
Collingwood bravely won the premiership in 1917.
The government and the armed forces at the time requested the clubs to disband as they felt it sent the wrong signals that some fit young men should be playing sport while others risked their lives.
But they couldn't force them.
Collingwood were one of the four clubs that defied that request.
WHAT HYPOCRITES !
Now you will see FILTHY SCUM like Maguire and co on Monday bleating on about the ANZAC traditions.
Traditions that their club thumbed their nose at.
But now when there is a quid to be made they suddenly embrace it.
It should be rotated amongst all clubs, or the top two Vic clubs is also a reasonable proposal.
Essendon and friggin Collingwood DO NOT OWN OUR WAR HISTORY.
The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.

we used to sometime play on Anzac day.
I remember playing Carlton on Anzac day and Richmond another year.
So will the best players in those games also get retrospective Anzac day medals??????????

I congratulate Mick Malthouse for raising the argument that Collingwood and Essendon have no right to play every Anzac Day.
He said it was a privilege not a right.
Also said that after 15 years it should not be a Collingwood Essendon game only - said maybe early on as Sheedy had fought for it, but not now.
At least one of the coaches of the clubs involved has had the courage to put it out there.
