Didn't seem to bother St Kilda fans back in 1998.

In fact, on a public holiday, over 70,000 came to watch us play Richmond, with an estimated 10,000+ locked out.

Footy on a public holiday seems to work well for everyone, actually.

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

I know, but if youre going to copy Rugby as a blueprint to success maybe rethink?
Rugby woi;d be a huge hit in the Western Suburbs come Easter Friday. Canterbury Bulldogs the Easter Friday specialists?

Look, im sure with the saturation of footy we dont need it on the one day everyone has a day off.

Religion or not.
I'm happy for everyone to have a day off once a year. There's plenty of days between October and March that could be used.

It is a ridiculous throwback to the days when Mannix and his choirboy loving friends had undue influence over the Victorian Government.
Only a small minority of brainwashed "thinkers" will actually be attending church today.
So why should the rest of us be denied AFL to appease them?
I doubt if there are any religious services on in the afternoon, so why not a game then?

A great opportunity exists for us to push for a Good Friday MCG blockbuster - 2pm each Good Friday.
Since the AFL creates and allows certain clubs to unfairly monopolise days like Anzac day and QB Holiday, then perhaps rather than fight for fairness we should create our own day.

What better day for us than Good Friday.
And put an end to this 19th century embarrassment.

The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.

Whats embrassing about a family day with your family away from distractions and for many praying in church?
embrassing is not having anything to do on a day your day isnt structured for you .

Nothing!
But why should someone else tell me which day to do it?

It would be fantastic to be at the G today with 70,000 people watching StK play say Hawthorn.

I've then got Sat, Sun or Mon (or Tues this year) to choose when and what to do with my family.

Our christian heritage was a holy war between Cathos and Proddys last time I looked. We should have a day off to celebrate our criminal heritage, something we would have in common. Our forefathers were not not exactly moral pillars. We could all do the hand cuff gesture at the end.

There should be footy on the Friday prior to Easter Sunday.

The only good about Good Friday is it's a public holiday.

Religo crap is irrelevant in the argument it's all about would a decent matchup draw a good crowd like Anzac Day does.

Get your head out of your arses Dimwit and Mike FitzCarlton and get it happening!

Big vote to the game, bring on the Saints V Demons.

Would have loved nothing more than heading off to the G tonight after working all day and having a refreshing ale with my mates and family, just the way I'd like to spend the night when all 12 million of the religious mob are at church.

That still leaves at least 10 million to line up at the G and do what they want.

It's a very Melbourne thing isn't it?

The NRL have a bumper* crowd tonight for the Tigers/Bronco game in Sydney and it seems that sport is played all over the world on Good Friday.

The arguments against playing the normal Friday evening game don't really stand up to scrutiny.

Like everyone who adheres to beliefs, whether they go is wholly up to them. Joe Gutnik used to pass on Melbourne's Saturday games from memory?

Just watch the Good Friday appeal instead.
My nephew is currently running up Eureaka Tower (Firey's V Police) on the Ch 7 telecast to raise money for the appeal!

I'm a Christian. I hate fish but I don't eat meat on Good Friday- more as tradition due to my late nanna than out of any religeous belief. I love the idea of family time, but to be honest I find Good Friday to be the most boring and my least favourite day of the year.

Would I watch football if it was played on Good Friday- yes I would. Would I go to the game- most likely if we were playing. Do I think there should be football on Good Friday? No I don't.

If you choose not to use Good Friday for any form of religeous observance is entirely up to you. I respect anybody's choice not to share my religeous veiws. However the fact is you are able to enjoy your long weekend courtesy of a public holiday that is given in reverence of Christianity. Therefore Christians should not be obliged to work on Good Friday. If you can find enough players, coaches, support staff, umpires, boot studders, record sellers, security, ground staff, pie sellers, parking attendants...... who would ungrudgingly work without feeling that their beliefs were at all compromised then I'm fine with it.

Good call Debi. Good to see you were able to put forward your views without denigrating anyone, unlike so many on here who seem to be only able to feel good about themselves by putting others down.

Cut out the religo nonsense.

Melbourne is full of Indians and Asians who don't celebrate Easter.

Plenty of them would love the penalty rates for working on a Public Holiday.

In fact, plenty of Christians would love the high $$$ on offer also.

Hmmm...They seem to happily work Easter Saturday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday.

These workers would be casual anyway. Most wouldn't work every shift every week so I am sure that you could find enough people to fill the roles...Especially for the double-time rates for a public holiday!

As an observation...With all the stuff that is going on the world over with wars, natural disasters and the like does anyone really think God cares about 50,000 people at the 'G watching 44 blokes playing a game of footy on Good Friday?

I like this post. I am not a christian, think it is all a fairy tale believed by people who are ignorant, but thats cool, they can believe what they like as long as they dont try to ram their fairytales doen my throat.

Good Friday, Easter Saturday, Monday and Anzac Day are all gazetted Public holidays. I might not be a christian but can understand and even enjoy the religious reverence of Easter. I have never been to war but can understand why we have a day to respect others who have fought for our freedoms.

One thing wrong about the above post. regardless of your religion, you ARE obliged to work on Good friday if you are a nurse, firey, or copper, or a train driver and a host of other essential services. Probably christians at the power stations as we speak.

As for playing footy on GF? Well it cant hurt to have one day a year where you have to be entertained or go to the footy, or movies (which were opened) or the shops.

In saying that, if people want to go to the footy on GF they should be able to.

In America, one of the more devout christian countries, they have footy on Christmas day, surely even more sacred in the christian calendar than GF.

Anyway, personally, I enjoyed my day with the family.

I have no problem with that. As I said, as long as nobody who would prefer not to observe the Christian holiday is forced or coerced in any way then there is no reason not to play on Good Friday.
But that includes players so if there is not a full list to choose from we must accept their decision not to play, or if a coach chooses to observe the holiday who steps in on game day? As for security, vendors, etc etc how many would feel pressured to work or risk losing shifts in future?

I'm not opposed to the game as such. In fact it would be the highlight of my boring day. The fact remains it IS a religeous holiday. If you are not religeous, fine. Accept the day off graciously without ridiculing the followers whose religion gives you that day off.

I agree with your view that football would be great to watch on Good Friday. I disagree with your view that it should be played- unless it can happen without the willing contribution of practicing Christians.
Although your views are not totally compatible with mine I don't call your views nonsense. Please show me the same respect for mine.

Ok Debi each to their own.

I'd be very disappointed if ANY of our coaches or players would boycott GF footy due to religion.

Their religion should be footy!

As for JB's point about Xmas sport innthe USA, well I reckon the test starting on Xmas Day here would be a fizzer, so I'm cool with no sport on Xmas Day.

But GF is a nothing day for 90% of Aussies let's face it.

Sure, if GF footy is s fizzer crowd and ratings wise then don't do it.

But FFS why not at least trial it ONCE rather than not at all???

A couple of points.
Yes, the NRL plays on Good Friday in front of a few thousand people in some cold stadium...they look like they've sold their souls.
This year we effectively have a five-day weekend for Easter/Anzac Day. There are AFL games on five days including Thursday. Are you really determined that we need to have footy on Thursday night as well as every single day and night of those five days?

Also if religion or spirituality means nothing to you and there's nothing to life except entertainment and money, think about this:
What kind of rates will catering staff (for example) be on? How many will they hire? What if people vote with their feet and it's like the NRL...a small crowd?
Also, if we're going to change the rules and hold a huge AFL game on that afternoon, it'll be a matter of time before there are moves to have everything else open on Good Friday...Myer, DJs etc and those employees will lose an important holiday.

Surely it doesn't hurt to have just one day in the year when people can 'pause for breath' before the madness of the footy season really kicks in?

It is a govt gazetted holiday, the govt gives me it off not a religion. I dont get ramadan or Hannaka (sic?) off work even if i am Muslim or Jewish. I dont get Buddist or Hindu religious holidays off even if i was of one of those religions.

The religion means nothing to me be it Christian, Hindu, Sikh, or any other.

You views are nonesense in my opinion. You can say what you like about my views as well, couldn't care less.

So if practicing christian power workers dont want to work today, we should have blackouts? If youa re in a car accident today, OK for you to die in a twisted wreck because the firey's or ambo's are practicing christians, or if you are lucky enough to get to hospital, you bleed to death because christian nurses and doctors dont want to work?

Whats the difference? Will you go to a mythical hell if you collect tickets on Good Friday? Or if you work at all?

It is a weak argument.
