Channel 7 coverage
Did it seem to anyone else that we returned from the ads between goals with just a microsecond before play restarted?
And that two different camera angles were replayed whilst play was still going on?
I know the ads pay for the telecast, but I would like to see centre bounce set-ups before the ball hits the turf.
Something the AFL should look at before they allocate future broadcast rights.

Without being a paranoid fool with a persecution complex, I kind of found last nights commentary at times to be a bit biased. I think that bias is the wrong word...
But they were barracking for a brisbane win....since a saints loss would be the bigger story.
Perhaps it was just me.

The last time I watched a live Channel 7 broadcast involving the Saints was the first year Channel 7 had returned to the football broadcast and it was a shocker.
If anything is to go by, nothing has changed.
The Farran Ray goal in the first quarter was with a "long long long" shot that just showed a group of players running towards goal, and who knew who kicked the gaol from that shot and the call.
Leigh Matthews should be excluded from a Brisbane game such was his bias and Bruce always seems to gush about anyone or anyteam that is not St Kilda. Plus Dennis' comments about St Kilda being hit by the karma bus because of the wet ground being similar to the old days at Moorabbin. That's fine Dennis but none of the players actually played at Moorabbin in the good old days.
If Foxtel can broadcast the game of a Firday night and I'm stuck at home watching it then I'll switch to Foxtel.

Ignoring the commentary what I found frustrating was the camera work.
At times they were showing players or coaches off the ball for far too long instead of returning to the action.
Then when they were covering the action they often had a tight close-up which didn't allow you to see the bigger picture.
Would much prefer a "medium" shot showing at least 30 metres around the ball so you can see the options, and when the ball is being kicked a longer shot to see who is down there before tightening up on a marking contest.
Very frustrating.

No it wasn't just you - I ended up turning off the volume with that robotic bottom feeder Harley calling the match from the point of view of the Lions
You would have thought BL won by 5 goals
With any luck the 7 bid will lose the next rights

We were so frustrated too. Wondered if it was just bc I usually see it live but think it was more than that. Either too close, too far away or just not on the game!

Channel seven should be treated with contempt, because that is how they treat the public. They are white-collar criminals.
The MEGAWALL was just so stupid and appallingly ridiculous. You've got two tiny little boxes showing the coaches against this massive MEGAWALL backdrop with adds on it. Just give us a split-screen of the coaches! It really gets my goat. Hope to god they don't get the next rights.
The commentary, however, I thought was not bad, Lethal contained himself well considering he's an ex-brisbane coach, and with Bruce and Dennis you always know what your'e going to get, maybe slightly biased at times, but all in all fair and balanced coverage.

The commentary team started off objectively and then got a bit excited at the prospect of an upset. I like the Seven team on the whole: Bruce is a little annoying, Commetti is excellent but I'm over his feeble jokes, Matthews and Harley are quite insightful.
Far better than that hateful crowd on Ten: Huddo. Lane (Tim, that is: I quite like the uber-fox Samantha), Quarters, Walls, Maher. I simply despise the lot of them, with the partial exception of Luke Darcy. Give ne Seven any day!

Yup - thought the commentary was OK. Made excuses for the poor skills and Matthews said all you can do on that surface is dig in and win the game, nothing pretty.meher baba wrote:The commentary team started off objectively and then got a bit excited at the prospect of an upset. They were all amazed at the free against Montagna and were genuine about the Saints, especially Harley whom I think is an excellent colour commentator.
Lance or James??

If it is possible, channel 7 has gone backwards from their coverage in the late 90's. It is just terrible now, Bruce isn't what he used to be, and they are the worse broadcaster by far at the moment. Lets just hope Ch 9 get up in the new rights, otherwise we will have to put up with knobs like Tom Harley and their stupid megawall shite for years to come.

Why, because James Brayshaw and Dermott Brereton aren't knobs?Tom_Sainter wrote: Lets just hope Ch 9 get up in the new rights, otherwise we will have to put up with knobs like Tom Harley and their stupid megawall shite for years to come.
Megawall is a stupid gimmick, but they don't show it during play so who cares? Change the channel for a few minutes if you don't like it.

the camera angles were horrible. they have some crappy camera down on the fence inside 50 so they feel compelled to use it for tight shots in the forward line - but every time they swapped to it every viewer lost track of what was happening.
as far as commentary bias, there's no doubt the commentators were on the lions' side. it's not surprising, though, as that was the story. "fear the injured young lion; plucky kids beat saints on the slide!"
it didn't quite come off as they hoped but you can't forget that the media always has a preset agenda, and when you've been up for a few years that agenda will always be against you.
on the other hand, remember the first 10 rounds of 04? everyone and their dog was barracking for the saints - if we weren't playing their team. it was a classic footy fairy tale. this year that role will be played by jimmy hird's bombers.

Footy is very expensive to broadcast.Furphy wrote:I agree with bergholt, the camera angles were terrible. Where did they recruit their camera operators, work experience kids from Ch.31?
Maybe over the years they have cut down on the number of cameramen and their pay also perhaps?
I wonder if you can get some good cheap camerman labor from our old favorite India?

Then don't bid for the rights and try and convince the supporters they are watching a top notch broadcast when it's clearly rubbish. The AFL might be happy with the standard but I can't see much difference from the last time I watched a Channel Seven broadcast which was several years ago. It's still crap.saintspremiers wrote:Footy is very expensive to broadcast.Furphy wrote:I agree with bergholt, the camera angles were terrible. Agreed. Any commentary can become annoying.meher baba wrote:Why, because James Brayshaw and Dermott Brereton aren't knobs?Tom_Sainter wrote: Lets just hope Ch 9 get up in the new rights, otherwise we will have to put up with knobs like Tom Harley and their stupid megawall shite for years to come.

For mine, the occasional flip past MMM on the radio dial keeps me from getting any nostalgia about channel 9. I'm more interested in the game of footy actually being played than Garry Lyon's haircut, the latest clever nickname conceived by Brayshaw, or what the guys are going to do after the game.
Finally heard Paul Roos do a gae this weekend - his common sense approach makes everyone around him seem like idiots.
