You would think with 4 Geelong players flying with Roo that our other forwards would have a picnic. Not so though.

Got any pictures of Gamble coughing it up? There should be plenty about...not that I'd hang the guy, he was probably pretty nervous. But once he threw himself at it and coughed it up, there was no pressure put on the opposition from him, or anyone else.

honestly i got the feel Gamble was a bit nervous about playing against his old side ... some players lift when the come up against their old team but gamble seems a bit too timmid against geelong (from the two games against them) its still early so that timmidness of hitting your old mates hard will fade ... hopefully

That is comical & re-iterates how stupid our plan last night was.

Personally I'd go with selection, not game plan....

Comical how obvious, I agree.

again i dont think Ross Lyon had on the white board "kick it to Roo 4 on 1"

the question i have is if there are four geelong players in the frame where were the other saints players ? where were the crumbers ? Roo will make a contest EVERY time so there should be a crumber there at all times

I never said it was Ross Lyon's plan - the point is that we consistently did this - through stupidity or whatever, the result is - it's never going to work.

S. Milne should be a much better crumber than he is. He gets his goals on the lead & run most of the time.

Schneider is a smarter crumber most definitely - but we needed another good tall target in the F50 & some fleet footed players that get the ball (ie not McQualter).

Yes, this photograph exemplifies how poor our strategy - or lack there of - is for delivering the ball into our attacking half.

The question also beckons, why aren't small forwards like Milne and Gamble in the frame to lend support?

Hopefully having guys like Schnieder and Kosi back will ease the squeeze (excuse the Mark Latham lingo) on Roo.

I hope Riewoldt isn't calling for it with four players around him

We need to develop and play a young fast kid or 2 .. our forward line , pace running ability and ball skills can only improve from last night.

We have nothing to lose .. we have to try a few new things.

There will be many more Riewoldt photos like that all year if we don't alter things... 3 against one and an opposition defender free to pick up the resulting crumbs and rebound away from our slow forwards.

The most frustrating aspect of this 'strategy' was that our other forwards and mids failed to get front and centre. This is meant to be Milne's bread and butter (crumbing) - he had a pathetic game last night, one of his worst.

Makes me laugh every time I see the name Kosi as the solution to the 3:1 or 4:1 one defense on the captain.
Kosi has proven on many occasions that he isn't the answer to this most difficult of puzzles.
Time we looked at another solution.

It's laughable that week in week out nick riewoldt is the only target and must endure 4 or 5 opposition players teaming up on him every week.

The coaching department has this glaring problem and do nothing about it.

Nick riewoldt is getting massacred and it's probably shortening his career.

What will our coaching department do? How will they try and create another forward target

Why don't we seriously play Reiwoldt on a wing and construct a forward line without him there? I think this will work. We will then be forced to use the best option and not just one. Reiwoldt will still obviously run down and create an option every now and again but it would be much harder for oppositions to triple team him in this case and we would be less predictable. This has to be tried, because what we are doing at the moment with Reiwoldt is simply not working and never will!

I don't know if it's all that simple.....when there are 3-4 players on Riewoldt - there should be free Saints players running riot on their own

Doesn't happen though

So why is the ball there then?

Do they kick it to him anyway, does he call for it, are they are leading to the same place?

Oh and

The photo also doesn't show another key failing., namely that this contest would be in a low scoring percentage zone.

Geelong mostly through Scarlett try to "own" the central corridor.
This means that a mid will look up and see congestion in the corridor so will kick it wide.
Time and time again the ball was kicked deep into the pockets or out to the flanks.

So even if Roo had won the three on to one contest he would be kicking from a low percentage region.

So every time we kicked to him in an outnumbered situation it was a double win for Geelong.

I think he does call for it sometimes. Whether Riewoldt calls for it or not, if he is double or triple teamed, there should be other players on their own, unmarked, surely.
While I don't like seeing 3-4 defenders on him - I've always wondered what the other unmarked Saints are doing

Unless they're told to zone back and defend..........
