"Kick it long"

Post: # 1045311Post SainterK »

Wonder what those supporters will they say if we do

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/sp ... 6015618121

ST KILDA, in attempting to address the scoring shortfall that has harmed it in its past two grand final losses, is looking, in a sense, to the past for a solution it hopes will lead to a bright future.
Back to a time when it was the norm for a midfielder to kick long into attack in the hope a forward would take a big grab.

To that golden age where frustrated fans were less prone to pray their players would "kick the bloody thing".

It has been notable in two pre-season hit-outs that St Kilda has opted for a taller forward line, even given it has boasted Nick Riewoldt and Justin Koschitzke as mainstays for several years.

Football, of course, will never go back to the set position, one-on-one style of past generations, but St Kilda midfielder Leigh Montagna yesterday said the long kick into attack would return.

Damn I liked the massive handball chain last week.

I also love supporters going off saying "kick the bloody thing!"

Jimmy Gwilt will play a bigger role this year by kicking long to position. Most noticeable was how the other back five would look to Gwilt who would then pump the ball forward with his raking left foot kicks. He was credited with most possessions against Geelong - so that's the plan.

Makes sense.

He has the accurate kick, the body to shrug a tackle, can we weave his way through traffic....

I could go on 8-)

One thing I've noticed this year is we are playing on - moving the ball and the play - much much more.

Very much so.

Which makes me wonder, I know it's still important, but is the emphasis on mobility in the forward line going to me as much of an issue as once thought?

We have some of the best contested markers in the comp in Roo and Kosi, if the mids and running defenders can play on quickly and 'kick it long'

I am really excited about this year....

I really like the idea of Lenny and Armo in the middle doing the bulk of the inside work, classy users of the ball like Goddard Dal and Joey free to be the main users of the ball, a forward line that is still one of the most imposing, a composed backline.

Good feeling 8-)

Leg-speed may be an issue with us, but the ball moves quicker through the air than anyone can run.

Aerially we are fairly strong, so this tactic has its merits. Moving the ball quickly is very important imo.

yeah quick movement when u get it is the key these days. u need to move it back into your fwd line while the opposition are still pressing fwd and then they cant get back quick enough. pies got a lot of goals doing that last year. in the past we played that static swans style fwd possession movement too much . where we kept the ball - but allowed the opposition to get back in numbers and make it too congested in our 50.

I'll be interested to see how we play against Essendon tonight in a full game. They're the side which always gets to us, no matter ladder position (well, in recent times anyway).

If we play this new free flowing, long kicking game plan, we'll basically be playing fire with fire.

yeeah you do

the issue being that the game plan has failed to win a GF and to my thinking is looking less likely to win one in the future...
What intrigues me is that Lyon honed his game plan over five years, recruited the players he needed to carry it out, so why change now? Why not just get even better at it?
Geelong and Collingwood have been fast ball movers in the past, we have always had problems with Ess, so we now seem to want to match them. What sets Gee & Coll apart from the rest is the precision of ball movement , and they RARELY went backwards. When the knives started to come out for geelong last year, the game plan was described as "kamikaze forward movement".
So yes you may have laughed at the "bomb it long" crowd, but which faction will crack first if it is straight down the throat of an opposition player...

Bump

"You are going to have to kick it in and give your talls a chance. Having a couple of talls, whether it is two or three, just gives us something to kick to and make a contest and then get the smalls under the feet.

Well we got the kick it long part right, the tall part needs addressing though.
