Saints close to Centrebet deal Caroline Wilson
February 10, 2011
ST KILDA is on the verge of signing a long-term sponsorship agreement with gambling agency Centrebet in a deal that could provide one happy off-field ending to the club's summer of discontent.
Contrary to reports that suggested potential new backers were reconsidering plans to join forces with the Saints, the club is close to snaring an agreement that would see Centrebet become joint major sponsors of St Kilda with Linen House, which has extended its deal for another year.

This is a really unfortunate development.
Betting agencies are a scourge on sport and I hate having my team doing a deal with Sportsbet.
We should be setting an example by staying away from this type of misery making institution. We don't need to stoop to this.
I want to be proud of my club.
Not through this type of sponsor.

incredibly disappointed with this.
i am sure that it is good for the bottom line and there was no sinister intention on the part of the club but as someone that has seen the devastating effects of gambling addiction on people's lives it saddens me to have such an association with the team i love.

Maybe. or maybe not.Moccha wrote:Really couldn't care if a gambling company sponsored the Saints. In the big scheme of things it's not going to affect whether people will gamble or not.
But the intense focus on gambling detracts from the heart of the game.
Culturally and spiritually corrosive (in my opinion).
Would we care if CUB sponsored us. I doubt it and even though gambling effects a small percentage, drinking would effect a lot more. Not many die because of gambling but plenty do because of the drink.
Its a way of the club getting money. Surely we dont have to use their product because they sponsor us.

Great news!! A major sponsor with a stable financial backing is a big win.
Now let's have the moral debate:
Are west coast supporters all sufferers of obesity since they're major sponsor is hungry jacks??? Isnt childhood Obesity bad??
Perhaps we could get someone morally good like the tac to sponsor us because it really improved the road toll oh and no players from Richmond or collingwood committed any road violations in those times.
The point ? Clubs need sponsorships. Sponsorships don't grow on trees. Being able to unearth big companies to sponsor the football club is a positive. It shouldn't require moral judgements.

I have had a centrebet account for years. i use it from time to time and i dont have a gambling problem.
As long as the AFL makes sure it runs a clean comp and really punishes and regulates anyone who actually works in the afl industry at a footy level from betting then i see no issues. I didnt know saintsational was such a nanny state.
i think its GREAT NEWS!
