McEvoy Time Trial

Post: # 1037156Post hayes66 »

In the article today about gards in the Herald Sun they said Mcevoy ran a sub 10min 3km time trial. Thats bloody quick even for a midfielder but for a ruckman thats very exciting, would have to be close to one of the best times for a bloke his size in the afl. Now on the field he doesnt seem to have much acceleration but iv always thought he covers the ground well. His been beaten in the hitouts a bit but i reckon his improving and his marking is very good. Anyway with those kind of times im getting excited about this bloke, rucks always take a long time but im thinking his our ruck set for the next several years. Its become very evident the need for him now along with stanley and may have been a very smart move by the ex RM Peake with one of his only 2 first round picks in his time at the saints. (The other being Lynch who still has a lot of question marks).

I'm a huge fan of big ben. I think he will go a long way with our club. He can run all day and his marking is riewoldt like at times.

His hit out work isn't the best but I feel the new sub rule will benefit him greatly. He will be able to run the dinosaur tap out specialists off their feet and break even with the more athletic modern ruckmen.

I also think he's got the best attitude I made this call about a year and a half ago and I will stand by it. Ben McEvoy is the future captain of st kilda.

needs to keep up the work rate into games. Also needs to work with the midfield coach to not only learn where to move to be dangerous for the team but to mitigate the likes of Jolly etc.

IMO he was one reason we were destroyed in the replay.

yeah pretty much.

Based on his last game he still has a very long way to go.

Good to see that his body is capable of some substantial fitness levels.

yeah totally agree, hes a good prospect as a second ruckman but in my opinion he is just too slow off the mark. when he is versing the likes of leigh brown he seems fine but jolly tore him to bits. kosi ended up being our number 1 ruckman lol

Give the guy a wee bit of time to develop. He is going to be a star ruckman

Didnt think he was nearly as bad as everyone made out in GF2...

Sure had some bad moments, one shocking one that sticks in everyones mind that was 100% Peakes fault, but did some terrific things also, including a few very strong grabs...

Will be a star, and will certainly come on a long way this year, Im sure of it!!....

AND no (as far as we can tell  ) off field issues! The lad seems to just be prepared to work hard at improving himself. Showed a lot of guts in the way he dealt with missing out on a spot for GF1...future leader? I would think so

There is only one player that I can think of that didn't have a shocker in the replay, and if we are going to be comparing McEvoy to Goddard I don't think he is ever going to come out on top.

Attitude is everything though, this bloke will get the absolute most out of his talent, which whilst isn't anything extraordinary it is more than enough for him to be a fine player at the highest level.

From what I have seen at trainings he is quite vocal, especially with the other youngsters, hopefully they can look up to him a bit and try to emulate his behaviour and attitude,

I think I read somewhere that Big Ben has been in our top 4-5 in all the running testing at the club this pre-season. It's normally Geary & Eddy who lead the way in these tests. Who else would be up there? !!

I would think that Al Smith would go alright, IIRC he was a national runner over 400m, I know there is a big difference between 400m and 3 kms but still.

I remember reading somewhere that Roo came forth for one of the time trials and I was initally surprised.

Of course when you think about his running ability, it isn't that surprising.

I can't see the point in getting excited about internal time trials. Someone has to be first, someone has to be last.

Does it directly relate to on field success? Geary and Eddy usually do very well.

Did Collingwood do the same trial? Where would McEvoy have finished there? Does it really matter?

Jolly got (virtually) delisted by Melbourne at the age McEvoy was playing in the GF replay.

Ruckman take 5-6 years. McEvoy has had 3. We won't see anything like his best except in glimpses for the next 2-3 years, and then he will start to hit his straps.

Thing is -- if he can already hold down #2 in the GF team in 2010, how good will he be in 2-3 years?!

The problem is that our club doesnt probablhy have 2-3 years. We need him this year but I do agree with what you say.

I think its more about the time. Bens time is up there with the elite midfielders in the comp, not just the club. Also, Dave Misson said that there have been around 20 PB's. That means the guys are IMPROVING !!

At running time trials.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing but I don't know how it translates to improved performance during the season.

One of the advantages for us is the new interchange rule which should mean rucks need more than just an ability to tap the ball down.

Ben always seems to go well around the ground just needs a bit more development in the ruck work and he will be a good player.

Yeah I agree with you, track times doesnt relate to onfield success but one of the main criticisms of McEvoy has been his far too slow to match it with the new breed of ruckman. Hence, what I was saying is IMO he still needs work in the ruck but he has marking covered and if he can run a sub 10min 3k time trial he must be able to move. Sub 10min is elite and whilst he lacks acceleration and this time trial is across a longer distance, you have to be able to move to get sub 10. Amongst ruckman he may stand alone for that type of endurance and with the new rules most clubs may only play 1 ruck so endurance wise he may run some of the others off their feet. Ultimately he doesnt have the acceleration but for someone whos criticism has been ground coverage sub 10min is at least promising as it means he can move.
