So a relative kid whose only ever claim to fame was taking, frankly, a rather arsey mark on Pavlich in a NAB cup came when Pavlich tripped on said kids feet is all of a sudden an unrecognised, unfulfilled superstar-gone-to-waste...
Okay then...If it makes you feel better...
I'd like that crystal ball all the other clubs have that ensures every rookie draft lays golden eggs...

well, to be fair, it is. the point of hr management - which is essentially the entire list manager's role - is that you know pretty well what everyone is thinking about their role and their future, and they feel they can come to you about any concerns. this doesn't completely avoid bad things happening, but it does give you a good chance of avoiding these sorts of issues.Spinner wrote:This thread isnt serious is it....
Someone quits in between list lodgements and its the list managers fault.

They obviously thought they could talk him around.bergholt wrote:well, to be fair, it is. the point of hr management - which is essentially the entire list manager's role - is that you know pretty well what everyone is thinking about their role and their future, and they feel they can come to you about any concerns. this doesn't completely avoid bad things happening, but it does give you a good chance of avoiding these sorts of issues.Spinner wrote:This thread isnt serious is it....

What if the potential gain on him staying was greater than the risk of holding up a spot on the list?bergholt wrote:well, to be fair, it is. the point of hr management - which is essentially the entire list manager's role - is that you know pretty well what everyone is thinking about their role and their future, and they feel they can come to you about any concerns. this doesn't completely avoid bad things happening, but it does give you a good chance of avoiding these sorts of issues.Spinner wrote:This thread isnt serious is it....

Then it would seem it portrays good list management.

Ha. Fair enough. Can't say I really saw much of him. If you were given an opportunity to play AFL, I would rather be made to retire than choose to though.savatage wrote:He doesn't get on with the game of AFL football.DWOODROW wrote:Maybe he didn't get on with the coaching staff. does this mean he will not be picked up by another club??

I think there is a special 'Training Draft' whereby clubs can add a rookie to their list after the NAB cup and before the season startsst_Trav_ofWA wrote:wow how bad must all those clubs that passed on their last rookie pick be !!
That might be why some clubs passed
Apparently the players training for this final spot had to be nominated today eg Travis Tuck and Paul Johnson are training at the Hawker

I don't blame the club for this.saintlee wrote:As I understand it, Gaertner only indicated his desire to quit at a late stage, and the Saints wanted him to stay, which further added to the late decision to leave.WinnersOnly wrote:Gaertner quitting has seen another list management blunder !!! We now have Rookie picks 24, 41, 57 and then Jackson Ferguson (NSW Schol).
Surely if the Gaertner was a sceptical starter they would have approached him well before the third and final list lodgement date, to ensure he was committed to going on.
As it stands with him quitting we will have an unfilled rookie position carried over for the season.
To me this is a major blunder that shouldn't occur in a professional environment. It is another position that our recruiters could have filled and raised the odds of picking up another successful player through the rookie lists.
RL talks about small percentile gains - well that is another down the Drain!
Not good enough SAINTS !!!
Its hardly a major blunder. Its one rookie spot, we still have numerous kids on our main list and then 3 or 4 rookie spots. Its a minor hiccup in my view.
If Gaertner had made his decision in time, St Kilda would have had an extra rookie pick.
In manufacturing there is a process called "Just In Time".
Gaertner was "Just Too Late".
In theory he will remain a St Kilda rookie until List Lodgement No 1 due end of October 2011.
So he can change his mind but if he were to do so he would have to really perform for the club to take a risk on him.

I think some consideration ought be given to how tough life on the rookie list actually is.
If you're on the main list, you're gifted at a young age with money and adulation far beyond what you could achieve doing just about anything else. This is measured against a lack of privacy, needing to measure everything you eat and drink. A vastly curtailed social life... if you're on the main list, it's probably well worth putting life on hold for footy.
If you're going via the rookie list, you don't get the money or adulation... but you do have all the caveats. You undertake to train and train and develop to be ready so if one of the main list guys gets hurt you can try and steal their job.
For that you're trading off travel, professional advancement, and plain old going out on weekends. At 18 years of age.
If AFL footy is anything less than a dream, it's just not going to fly.
