an extra challenge- Cripps condition
All the Best Jamie-
But he is not alone and even at the Saints he can seek advice on living with a medical condition from a team mate- Raph's epliepsy.
Many function more than well enough with what are now everday conditons.

If I remember correctly, didn't Dale weightman have the same condition. Didn't stop him representing his statesaintbrat wrote:All the Best Jamie-

Good luck Jamie.
There is no reason that diabetes will affect his football as long as he is well monitered and has his condition under control.
Still, it seems odd to me that the club wouldn't have been aware of this before he was recruited.

I am presuming he attended draft camp
surely a form completed stating any known illness or medical condition!!
virtually all clubs (grass roots) seek that type of info on registration form
or information sheet for trainers
seems really odd that information not known at draft camp info.....
or made aware from our contact/interview.

No definitely not. Had asthma. It will be hard work for Cripps but he seems very dedicated from what I hear. it didnt effect his running last week. He was first in the 2k time trial for first year players.howlinwolf wrote:I stand to be corrected but didn't Plugger have a similar problem ?
Hopefully he can cope with this and lead a normal life.

maybe not, if plugger is right and the diagnosis was very recent, it may not be the factor.maverick wrote:Could this have contributed to the recruiting manager's demise?
Perhaps the recruiting manager's ability to pick dud after dud is though!

bergsone, do many kids (ie 18 year old and under), get Type 2?bergsone wrote:Depends on whether he is insulin dependent or it may just be type 2 which can be diet controlled. With medical staff to monitor him on a daily routine in a club ,he should fine, but from experience its not fun
I thought it was mainly Type 1 in that age bracket???

Its definitely type 1 however the injection make it very manageable. My mates kid has had it since he was 6 and does everything a 13 boy would do and more and to make matters worse for him he also has celiacs which means he cant have gluten. At least Cripps will be able to eat normally.bergsone wrote:Depends on whether he is insulin dependent or it may just be type 2 which can be diet controlled. With medical staff to monitor him on a daily routine in a club ,he should fine, but from experience its not fun

Harves just explained Jamie didn't know
but was losing weight and in getting checked found it was diabetes-
but his father and some of his family also have diabetes and he was 1 in 20 to get it
Dave misson will add a new string to his bow as he ( and Jamie I guess) learn to train with an added dimension-- Dietition will be major focal pint for Jamie I would think..

I'm not saying they stuffed up in any way at all, I don't see diabetes as a disability, just an extra factor for Cripps to be in control of.Animal Enclosure wrote:It was only a matter of time before we got the 'recruiters stuffed up' obligatory post.
Confidential medical details are just that...confidential.
I would like him picked on his merits and would hate to think they would have considered him any differently had they known. I was just commenting that these days most new employees in any job are asked to disclose existing medical conditions. So simply, I was surprised THEY didn't know, not that we weren't told. His medical details are indeed confidential, and unless he wanted it public its none of our business.
If however, it was undiagnosed at that point, as explained by plugger66, then it clears up why they would not have known.

Yes you are mainly right ,but not allways the case, just have to wait and see with him.Type 1 at 36 so it can happen at any timesaintspremiers wrote:bergsone, do many kids (ie 18 year old and under), get Type 2?bergsone wrote:Depends on whether he is insulin dependent or it may just be type 2 which can be diet controlled. With medical staff to monitor him on a daily routine in a club ,he should fine, but from experience its not fun

Nathan Basset (Crows ) was another with type I Diabetes and he handled it very well. They cope pretty well and at least AFL footballers have a lot of resources close at hand (medical, fitness diet) that other people don't. Having family with the condition he will be aware of what is required. He shouldn't let this condition spoil his dream of becoming an elite AFL footballer - and there is no reason why it should ! (N.B my daughter has had type 1 diabetes for 16 years - since she was 6)

I'm pretty sure Jarrad Grant from the Dogs has type 1 as well. He showed this season that it does't hold back performance. He was one of the few dogs that came on this year.
Good luck to him he is exactly the same as any other new recruit, needs to work his arse off to make regular senior performances and the rest will be managed by him and the staff at the saints.

Managed correctly this could end up being a great story for Jamie, the Saints and the illness itself.
And a caring, supportive approach by the club may well engender a level of loyalty that will help combat any go home factor when Cripps has established himself as a star in a few years time.
