And prime land the world over that they've never paid a cent for, nor land taxes on. And tithes from some of the poorest people in the world, again tax free. And donations from credulous believers every time there's a new statue 'crying' olive oil.ThePunter wrote:A lot of the Vatican's wealth is in assets such as Relics and Reglious artefacts that wouldn't be sold under any circumstances, and are entirely appropriately held by the Vatican.

It's the most mind-bogglingly opulent place on earth... sitting atop unseen catacombs bursting with treasures.
And why wouldn't they sell 'things' in order to house and feed people in need?

The New Testament is quite clear on the subjects of possession of material wealth and aiding the poor and impoverished.ThePunter wrote:I was there at Easter.
I would rather all those things be in the hands of the church than any collector.
Most of the artefacts wouldn't have been "purchased", so there was no wastage of church money.
They are valuable on paper.
They are in their rightful place.
Surely better those "things" were in the hands of a collector, and the money spent feeding, housing, clothing and protecting the less fortunate.

This thread is delivering....good to see several posters not holding back on religious quackery.
Most orthodox religious orders or beliefs are a massive crock of shyte.
Food beliefs (ie. Kosher, Halal), please, give me a break, how are they relevant in the modern world???
Fasting for religious purposes (ie Yom Kippur, Ramadan), also a crock.
Not using contraception (Catholics still aint it??), what nuttyness!
.....and I have only touched the surface.
Each to their own, but it really all get's a bit silly.
If only all these orthodox/devout followers of various religions directed their faith towards footy, the world would be a much better place!

It's all bananas.
I mean why do you need to be told to be a good person? Why does there need to be rules for that?
Maybe I should start my own religion (very tax effective operation as it happens).
It could be the 'Good bloke and you beaut sheila Foundation for people who do good stuff around the place.'
Really, if you just accept that you live and then you die, life's far less difficult to 'get'.

Selling all the artefacts would bring a once only amount of money to the church, who would then be left with no way of feeding the poor, and no historical artefacts, or buildings to worship, or offices to administrate charity...
Better to ignore the incredible amount of charity work done already, and still ongoing, and instead focus on the "wealth" of the church, as if it were created and sustained on "tithes", in the fashion of some US TV evangelist.
Catholics aren't required to tithe - they choose to do so of their own free will.

Re the relics read "The Pardoners Tale" from the Canterbury Tales by Chaucer and how real those "relics are"
But there are many other ways the Vatican maintains the massive wealth that seems to belie its teachings of the church to the flock who put money in the plate week after week to prop up the scandals (sexual and banking) and all the hangers on who reside at the Vatican.
If only there were more parishes such as the one in Boston who stopped putting money into plate as they didn't want to be part of yet another pay out on behalf of the Curch to those who had been molested over the decades by their priests. They weren't angry at the victims, they were angry at the church expecting the local parish to help cover the payout.
This probably explains why I'm totally underwhelmed by the whole Mary Mackillop event.

I bought a genuine piece of the cross Christ was crucified on when I was at the Vatican. Like the other 5 million who did the same before me. What Enrico Misso said. Times 1,000. Eventually science will push this stupid, exploitative, evil superstition into its grave. The only place it grows is the 3rd world, where the poor, the ignorant and desperate can be exploited more easily.
BTW, MacKillop to centre half forward. Roo to full forward. Like Baldock before her, she's a short centre half forward who can apparently perform miracles. Just like the Doc himself. Should we make her captain as well?

Stupid people are everywhere.
Looking at the crowds at the Vatican, yes there were lots of god-fearing old ladies raised under the old school of obey and don't question.
But there was also a number of young people.
Western young people.
Rational thought processes are under attack by "feel good" religious eternal gratification promises, whether it is mainstream religions or "new and exciting" brands.
I'm not convinced that science/rationality is winning.
Our education system is failing us.
The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.

Yes religion does fail all the tests
- except in the blind eyes of the believers.
Yes this thread does have a few "cheap shots" at the Catholics.
But let's face it
- they DESERVE it !!!!
They set themselves up for it totally.
Funny little men.
No women.
Wearing silly hats.
And pretentious gowns.
Reciting in a dead language.
With deep personal sexual problems.
Advising their brethren on sexual matters.
Whilst covering up their colleagues indiscretions.
And then the extra absurdity of plucking out long dead people and bestowing titles on them on the basis of absurd evidence.
If you came up with a movie script for the Catholic church it would be dismissed as too stupid and unbelievable to have any credibility in modern times
- yet it exists

While I agree that everyone has a right to their opinion, I cannot judge people as a whole by what they believe in, and while the Catholic church and people within it have made mistakes, the basic faith that they follow is similar to most Western churches.
Are the laws of the Catholic church any stranger than some of the other religions, or is it that as a large religious organisation it is more open to attack??
Every church has it's rules, there are other churches that like their followers to have large families, say what they are able to eat or drink (Mormons) Ban dancing on any church premises (Baptists) do not allow their followers to watch television or listen to popular music.......
All of this though takes away from the good things that this particular woman did to educate children and help the poor !
If you don't understand Sainthood, it's like a Hall of Fame, where peoples good deeds and work for an organisation are acknowledged.....it just gets reported far more widely!!!

I think a big part of the problem most people have with the Church is when they appear to not be following their own rules... or the 'spirit' of their own religion.Saintstragic wrote:While I agree that everyone has a right to their opinion, I cannot judge people as a whole by what they believe in, and while the Catholic church and people within it have made mistakes, the basic faith that they follow is similar to most Western churches.

This is most stark in matters of Church wealth, covering up for pedophile priests, attitudes to condom use in impoverished and Aids affected communities, etc.
Also, personally I dont see how the whole notion 'Sainthood' and praying to/worshipping these Saints isn't breaking the first couple of commandments.
For mine, it all comes down to fear of death... some people are so horrified at the prospect of their life ending that they are prepared to delude themselves in any way they can, so long as the outcome is they dont have to acknowledge that they will end... they'd even prefer the notion that bad people suffer for all eternity (for making a few mistakes in their brief life) rather than just cease to exist.
Whatever gets ya through, I guess.

Slowly but surely Enrico. It's taken science and reason 500 years to get this far. Unfortunately you and I won't live to see it, but like all silly belief systems, it will disappear once something better replaces it. You and I can at least watch enjoying the spectacle from our fluffy cloud in the sky. No, wait a minute, heretics like us are going to the "other place"!
