Best team to never win a premiership?

Post: # 1012397Post Wollongong_saint »

Are the saints of 2003-2010 at the top of the list? Any history buffs have any better examples?

Plenty of good recent examples too, Collingwood in the early '00s, Collingwood in the late '70s early '80s, Geelong in the late '80s early 90s...I'm sure there's a lot of older ones. History is littered with brilliant losers.

Hmmm...maybe a career as an elite sporting coach awaits? Pleasing! Certainly a change from office slob.

In recent times you would say Saints 2009 and Essendon 1999

Who knows? But what I do know is it’d be a crying shame to see MORE stars of the St Kilda Football Club retire from the game without obtaining our ultimate goal! It brings tears to my eyes thinking players like Riewoldt, Hayes, Goddard, Fisher, Dal Santo, Milne etc could possibly roll out the door in years to come like Harvs, Burke, Lowe and umpteen other big names without getting their hands on a Premiership.

To say our past few years have been unsuccessful would be a little stiff. Stiff not to win a Premiership yes, but a top 4 team more often than not, and in the past two years a top 2 team. It just goes to show how incredibly hard it is to win one of these damned things! Keep in mind it’s taken 20yrs for Collingwood to snatch one. It’s not as if they’ve been there year after year chomping at the bit! Everyone had the Bombers pencilled in for back to back in 2000. There are no guarantees!

This last loss will force us to completely re-think, re-evaluate, understand a few home truths and reload!

As a supporter (talking about it right now) it’ll be hard to get excited about the 2011 season. The whole aspect of battling through 22 Home & Away games is like one almighty speed bump! Play our up & coming guys in the NAB Cup and see who shines.

When they created LENNY HAYES (in the shadow of Harvs) they forgot to break the mold (again)- hence the Supremely Incredible Jack Steven!!

Geelong in the 90's was an awesome team, with Gary Thug Ablett leading the way....pretty hard to top them.

We weren't a fair dinkum premiership side in 04 and 05 due to the internal problems - GT/fitness management - so can't be considered in the equation in that period.

Would imagine the players are feeling a bit the same at the moment.

Time is a great healer. I can remember feeling similar this time last year, but by the start of NAB cup the excitement levels were starting to rise again. Must admit it may take a little longer this time around.

The nab cup is like the Comm Games.....not the real thing.

I'll get excited come September 2011 IF we look half decent again.

If we got to 2004, it would have been ours.

Collingwood in 1970 lost 2 games, top of ladder, 44 points up at half time in GF lost to Carlton by 10 points

B: Wayne Judson Bob Murray Kevin Neale
HB: Gary Colling Barry Lawrence Neil Besanko
C: John Manzie Glenn Elliott Stuart Trott
HF: Jeff Moran Barry Breen Stephen Theodore
F: Carl Ditterich Allan Davis John Bonney
Foll: Brian Mynott Travis Payze Ross Smith (c)
Reserve(s): Rod Galt Stephen Rae

Not too many dudds in this team. Quite a few legends, in fact, a few of whom would walk into the current team.

They didn't win a Premiership either.

Are you serious man? Barry Breen kicked the winning point in our only premiership, and Cowboy kicked 5 goals that day! Davis, Mynott, Payze, Smith, Lawrence and Murray also all played!

Why wouldn't you include a team with Spud, Cubbins, Lockett, Bray, Harvey etc.?

I think the meaning of this thread has been lost in translation just a tad.

Lawrence didn't play until 1969.

Some of these individuals played in a premiership, but this team is significantly different from the 1966 team.

No-one regarded the 1971 team as a premiership team.

Not many teams are 19-0 and lose the cup, then back up the next year, draw, and then get their asses handed to them. Would have to be up there as one of the best teams to not win a cup. Another great St Kilda legacy...Makes ya wanna cry don't it.

Why would anyone care if we were or werent the best team to never win a flag. Do some people on here like depression?

no we like St Kilda, so therefore we suffer depression!
