Re: I seriously think we can topple the dogs!!!!!

There would be no more sure sign of improvement than beating the dogs this week...they completely smashed us last time. Just completely smashed us...we were outcoached and outplayed in every possible facet of the game. At our best our ball movement is fast and precise...in round 2 this year it was w...

Re: #14!!!!!

Its great that Gears is showing strong leadership and directions on the field. You need someone yelling and directing traffic. But I'm not sure he has really high footy IQ. How do we know he's directing intelligently and creatively out there? He doesn't strike me as a creative sort of player, more ...

Re: More good signs from the youngsters

Gresham - 19 disposals today and keeps creeping those numbers up which is particularly good as he seemed to play mainly as that small forward again. His maneuverability is sometimes amazing - his fake out on the flank was great. He's still not quite hitting his passes (although he nailed one) but y...

Re: who needs to be in our best..?

If every single midfielder plays at or very near his best and we have players presenting through the middle of the ground up to the defenders and every player has his kicking boots on we'll win. If our execution is poor, our ball movement is stagnant and the dees get first hands on the ball we'll ge...

Re: On the couch

I think the best gauge of which players are having the best season (slightly different to the best players in the comp) is the Coaches' Association votes. At present: 76 Rory Sloane (Adel) 69 Patrick Dangerfield (Geel) 64 Dustin Martin (Rich) 64 Joel Selwood (Geel) 63 Luke Shuey (WCE) 59 Marcus Bont...

Re: An absolute JOKE!!!

I was there in the eighties too, BM. Have you forgotten the first three rounds of 1985? Three consecutive 100 + losses. As bad as they were today, and they were very ordinary, we have suffered plenty of devastating losses over the journey that make today look like a premiership by comparison. A win...

Just look at Jack Steven's stat line...he has picked up this team and carried them over the line. As hard working as any player we've had.

Re: Saints v Bombers match thread

I'm only listening to the radio, which i find completely uninstructive, but it looks like without Weller, Membrey & Steven we'd be down by 15 goals against the worst team the comp has seen since Fitzroy folded. Why? How? Good on the three fellas mentioned above. Here's a good stat for Skunk Tim ...

Re: Billings as a midfielder

Do you have to be huge to be a midfielder? Jacks biggest issue at AFL level would be tank. Tank is still an issue for Billings, no doubt. But his biggest issue that I see is intensity. I don't think he has demonstrated the intensity at the contest to win a lot of the ball himself. Compare the way h...

Re: Saints v Gold Coast match thread

Look you have to say a huge game like last week would have taken a s*** load out of them. Its very hard for young teams to travel and backup those sort of games, physically and emotionally. I respectfully disagree. 'Young team' is a cop-out. It's their job to prepare for games and, sadly, this isn'...

I'm not watching, only radio, but 40 tackles half way through the last quarter! 40 tackles!

Where is our ticker?

Where is our leadership?

It's disrespectful. Of the club, the jumper, the fans.

Player by Player vs Geelong

I was watching from Level 2. Even though the crowd number was low, it felt like it was higher. Great atmosphere at the game and about as much fun as I've had at the footy for a while. I would say it was our most gutsy win for a while. They could have run over us in the third but we fought back and c...

Re: Better blend of age and youth today

I for one do not subscribe to the idea that Dempster and Fisher shouldn't be getting games or that they're holding others back or stunting anybody's development. The conclusions I draw from the stats above are that age ain't nothin but a number...it doesn't matter. As long as Fisher and Dempster are...

Re: Best game from a St Kilda ruckman for decades

I agree completely. Hickey gets my BOG too. I often get ahead of myself and compare him to Spider. He has excellent foot skills around the ground, is a very good overhead mark and his ball handling skills below knee level and on the deck are top notch. His follow up is always brilliant...like Josh B...

Re: Match day thread - Saints v Crows

Just like against west coast we are completely impotent on both offense and defence. Worrying that two facets of the game that are highly structured and can be coached and practiced -drilled - we are looking inept at. Clearance and kick ins...we look amateur. We're second to the ball and offering no...

Re: Jade Gresham

The vision is great, the lateral movement is great too, but equally important is the ability to switch automatically to the non-preferred side. I know it was just a handball, but we have very few players comfortable on both sides of the body, certainly not by foot. It's worth seconds and metres to b...

I don't have Paddy as a negative...I have one part of his game as a negative. Nobody ever plays a perfect game, I pointed out one thing I think he should work on. Probably is working on it, but it still needs work.

List 3 Positives & 3 Negatives vs Freo

Not necessarily the three biggest of each, just any three positives and negatives. I was watching from the Moorabbin Wing. Positives: * Fisher, Dempster, Geary: Kept us in the game and basically didn't lose a contest between them * Murdoch's field-kicking: Especially that long goal. He looked capabl...

Jack Newnes reeks of captaincy Jack is a good average footballer at this stage of his career. Hasn't had a starring "break out" game to date. Have not heard him interviewed so can't judge him in that area. All in all, Seb at this stage leaves Jack Newnes for dead. I don't think the gap be...

He is a natural midfielder, inside-outside. Reminds me a little of Diesel Williams' ability to get hands on the pill and find space in tight. Williams was a dog, whereas Gresham is sportsmanlike, but he is a natural bonafide midfielder. Still struggling with poise and ball use a little bit but that ...

Out: Hickey (cooked)? I don't think so. Maybe rotate Bruce and Paddy through the ruck more often to give him a bit of a breather. His season's been fantastic by and large. When I say cooked I mean he needs a week's rest. He has been excellent this year but it's been an unprecedented workload for hi...

Re: Welcome to the AFL Mr McCartin

Seriously though, Weller is not an AFL standard kick and would be better suited as an inside mid if we didn't already have so many of them on our list. Aside from his set shot miss yesterday, Weller's kicking for goal this year has been excellent. He is one of, if not our best, set shot kick for go...

Re: Welcome to the AFL Mr McCartin

Great hands...good to see a forward who presents and catches the ball in his hands. Very hard to defend. His goal kicking needs massive improvement. The one from outside 50 was great. Biomechanically pretty sound technique. The next one from around 35-40 out was not great technique, pulled the kick ...
