Re: Dunstan should be our next skipper

I recall that Dunstan was earmarked to lead the Saints, right from the start, when he was given Lenny's number 7, and I hope that he succeeds Geary as the next skipper in 2019. The thing about Dunstan is that he is arguably our most consistent team player, gets in and finds the ball and more often t...

Assessment in The Australian 2/4/18

Greg Denham, Senior Sports Writer for The Australian, has written a very frank appraisal of St Kilda's performance against North Melbourne on Good Friday, and the likely serious consequences. I have no doubt that this article will serve as a massive wake-up call to everyone at the club, the Board, M...

Re: The reason we are heading back down.

As bad as the loss to North Melbourne was on "Bad Friday", we should remember that it was only Round 2, and remind ourselves that North have had the wood over the Saints for many years: we have only beaten them twice in the past 8 encounters since 2012. And as my practicing Christian daugh...

2018 AFL Captains Ratings

Had a look at how the 18 AFL clubs captains compare for season 2018 on both Supercoach and AFL Fantasy (courtesy Footywire): Adelaide: Tex walker - $473,600/$658,000 Brisbane: Dayne Beams - $557,600/$731,000 Carlton: Marc Murphy – 595,000/$756,000 Collingwood: Scott Pendlebury - $586,500/$765,000 Es...

Re: Inspirational vintage film

The Jeans era as coach (1961 to 1976) was by far the most successful in St Kilda's history. As related in the club's DVD "Heaven and Hell - The Saints From 1897 to 2003", Allan Jeans won the coaching job for 1961 by just one vote of the Board, and he immediately took the team into the fina...

Re: Inspirational vintage film

Some great historic footage there. What's the first song they sing in the rooms afterwards? Sounds like ' stout hearted men ' Anyone else agree ? What a great doco Be nice if somewhere they still had all the footage they shot in the club rooms. Agree, Stout Hearted Men. Following is the chorus from...

Inspirational vintage film

Lazy summer days so in search of some uplifting stuff about the Saints, came across the following film on YouTube, if you haven't seen it you're in for a treat! I imagine this is shown to the team, especially the young blokes, before the start of the season, to complement the sort of stories that th...

Re: Mr. Richardson

I'm not sure that we armchair critics are really qualified to judge the performance of Alan Richardson as head coach, and I go along with the views expressed previously that the Saints are still in a "development" phase. I recall that according to the Master Plan revealed by the club in 20...

Re: Depth of list 2017 vs 2009/2010

Couldn't agree more that the depth of this list of Saints players is arguably the best in living memory. Saints definitely need to bring in at least one elite midfielder if they are going to be a force in 2018 - my tip is Josh Kelly. I also think they need to go after another more robust type player...

Re: Bruce Webster Wright for Savage Minch DMac

Agree with comments about Wright over Minchington - I go further and include Savage as well, and maybe McKenzie too. Wright's stats don't justify his selection over the other 3. In his 5th season, Wright has played just 32 games and is obviously not in the team's best 22.....don't understand why he ...

Re: We are on the right track but we need to reset!

As much as I feel so despondent following the last 2 losses to the Swans and the Dogs (I thought we were unlikely to do the Swans, but had much higher expectations in yesterday's game against an out of form Dogs outfit), we need to look at things in perspective. After 10 rounds in 2016 St Kilda were...

Re: Jarryn Geary to captain St Kilda

Quite obviously Geary was the players choice, even if he was not mine, as I'm not sure he will necessarily feature in the best 22 by season's end and it will be difficult for the selectors to drop him if he is the captain. Also a little surprised as Jamie Cox had indicated in a media interview recen...

AFLDelistings 2016

I'm not sure what it proves, but I was quite surprised to see the high rate of player delistings by AFL teams this year: Adelaide - 3 retired & 4 delisted Brisbane: 4 & 5 Carlton: 3 & 9 Collingwood: 5 & 3 Essendon: 1 & 10 (not counting the extra players they brought in for those ...

Ahhhh...optimism - how could one ever be a True Saints Supporter without being optimistic, "overly" optimistic even.........the difference this time is that there are strong grounds for this belief in 2017. We do in fact have a team that is well balanced right across the various levels wit...

Re: 16 or so wins

With 14 games at Etihad Stadium which are in reality all Home games, plus 2 at the MCG against Melbourne and Richmond, a total of 16 wins is most certainly achievable. You can also add the Round 6 match against Hawtorn in Tasmania as a likely win, as the Saints almost did in 2016 if it wasn't for a ...

Re: If The Dogs Can Do It. So Can We

A terrific post by @damienc and I totally agree that St Kilda have the potential to do in 2017 what the Dogs did last Saturday. There are some interesting parallels between the Dogs and the Saints, not least that they have Senior Coaches forged in the same mould - quiet by nature, composed under dur...

Re: 2017 St Kilda FC Skipper - Vote here

Mav Weller for me: he is easily our "hardest" player, an old fashioned ruck-rover with tremendous energy and elite skills, and at 25 next season will captain the team through the phase (2018-2022) when the Saints are expected to play finals. I acknowledge that Jarryn Geary has demonstrated...

Re: Thank You, Michael Nettlefold!

My recollection is that Lyon left St Kilda for 2 reasons, already mentioned in other posts: after reportedly sustaining a serious financial loss he was in desperate need of a big pay-packet, which Fremantle willingly provided, unlikely to be matched by the Saints as the team was in decline. Secondly...

Team Selection v Giants

From my observations of the Giants in 2016, it is imperative that the Saints select 2 specialist ruck men to combat the ruck dominance of the Giants. To leave Hickey alone to carry the burden against both Mumford and Rory Lobb is not going to work, as honest a toiler Hickey may be. And it would be f...
