Re: Goddard to Essendon

SO when will we hear what we "get" for losing Brendan Goddard?
The news subtext is annoying too - ABC "The StKilda football club has *surrendered* champion player Brendan Goddard to Essendon"
Just GREAT for the brand

Re: Brendon Goddard set to sign with Essendon

Now I can officially slot him into the Team of Lost Souls ... its a crowded list and hard to get a game. And Pelchen is about as excited as if he just dug his hand into a bag of soggy donuts! When people say things like: plenty of upside - they really mean - yeah we know we are f***ed for most of th...

Re: Brendon Goddard set to sign with Essendon

I would not think we should be paying him 800K - I believe it should never have been allowed to go to FA.
We sat on our hands when we perhaps could have offered 500-600 over 4 years.
Just another loss for us - some imaginary star from the draft will hardly compensate.

Re: Brendon Goddard set to sign with Essendon

I still think it is a foolish decision. It will cause us to drop down the ladder and this will mean fewer members. Admin obviously think we have no chance of a successful finals campaign in 5 years. I think it is pathetic! Makes me sick that we would not negotiate a "possible fourth year"...

Re: BJ offered $1.9m over three years

Wow - what a thread !! Elite = Premiership? Lockett, Barker etc. - not elite? Whitten not elite? - of course they are - it relies on the team and coach to get a flag. Wow! AA twice - should have got a Norm Smith but they awarded it before he took that mark and goal. (no disrespect to Lenny at ALL - ...

Re: Scott Watters

OK - so back to Watters (i gave him 6.5) ... where will his coaching get us to next year?
What would get him an 8/10 .. finishing 5th? Can we do that?

Re: BJ offered $1.9m over three years

what tax would you pay on 600 G's a year? 100 grand?? half a mill in ya pocket each year? My guess would be 240K .. but there are accountants here. He still gets to earn more than the Prime Minister - which I always find to be pretty amusing - that coaches and top players get more than the country'...

Re: This guy (Rossy) can't coach

I agree that his game plan has a shelf-life of no more than 5 years ... and his time with us had come to an end ... and I am happy to watch us play some more attractive footy. I just hope we can halt other teams coming hard at us - and win the close ones next year. I am not sure that any coach shoul...

Re: BJ offered $1.9m over three years

If true it is probably a good and realistic offer to start the negotiations at. I certainly hope he stays - but can someone really come up with more than 120K more than that over four years? I actually do NOT feel that Freo Carltong and Ess are closer to a flag than us - we still can have another ti...

Re: This guy (Rossy) can't coach

Some of us in these discussions are trying to be revisionists ... re-writing history.
When Goddard leaves all those famous posters will be burnt - the coach was woeful - Ball, Goddard etc - were useless - etc etc.

Re: This guy (Rossy) can't coach

I think he coached pretty much the same as he always has. And based on tonight, I reckon he'll do the same next year too. Freo will play finals for a while. That game plan will continue to be effective against average teams, but they'll remain highly vulnerable against good teams. If Pavlich doesn'...

Re: Scott Watters

The only people who are embarrassing themselves are the ones who ignore the facts - we were rapidly going backwards under RL ! In the words of the great John MacEnroe "You can't be serious" - he is only the second coach to get us to two GFs .. get real. Next you will be saying the same ab...

Re: Scott Watters

I think he has done some good things - on performance 6/10 but because of attitude and change in plan 6.5/10 (maybe a seven tops - but we would have to have beaten another top 8 team or won a close one - neither happened)
Plenty of reason to think he could get 7.5-8 next year (near to top four)

Re: The Two Team Argument

Russel Morris, Ricky Nixon,
Milne never played seniors at Ess I think - so you gotta have some limitations.
You mean Vic VFL or AFL clubs?
I just remembered G Sidebottom - and B Duperouzel .. who maybe could have played with the Lost souls ....

Dave - we were lucky to win - and the wind was fine - Plugger kicked 12 straight! 11 up til 3/4 time.
If it was not for that free just before the siren you would have got 1-4. It must have been a lucky kick.
Thank goodness for Harves and Lennie!

Re: Why we are hated ....

As Dave said - we have spawned from PURE CULTURE - and the rest envy that! They may have had great teams - they may have won more flags - but they lack personality, passion and every footy game has been like a holiday for us foir a long time - it has been pure entertainment. And we are still here an...
